Songs of the Spirit, A Spring ConcertA celebration of the human spirit in song is the theme behind SUU’s Department of Music’s Masterworks Series’ Songs of the Spirit, A Spring Concert. Magnificent works from the classical repertoire will be sung by SUU Choirs with Symphony Orchestra accompaniment. This musical gem is scheduled for Friday, April 1 to be performed at Cedar City’s Heritage Center Theater beginning at 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for alumni with card and $5 for youth. SUU faculty, staff and students are admitted free with a valid I.D. card.

Featuring SUU’s Concert Choir, Women’s Choir, and Opus Chamber Choir, the evening’s program includes an array of works from the choral classical music archives. A highlight of the concert will be a performance of Franz Schubert’s inspirational Mass No. 2 in G Major. The SUU Symphony Orchestra beautifully accompanies these pieces creating a resonating sound of splendor.

Originally composed in 1815, Mass No. 2 in G Major is the best known of the three shorter mass compositions and was composed in less than a week. It premiered the year after Schubert’s first mass had been successfully performed in the composer’s home parish. The second mass was originally more modestly scored than the first, requiring only a string orchestra and organ in addition to the soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists and choir. This 22-minute piece consists of six movements: “Kyrie,” “Gloria,” “Credo,” “Sanctus,” “Benedictus” and “Angus Dei.” 

Conducted by Dr. Xun Sun, SUU Symphony Orchestra will perform Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No.1 in C Minor, Op.68. Brahms’ symphony took nearly 20 years to compose. Observed as one of the greatest symphonies in Austro-German tradition, it was first performed in 1876.
